This week we announced over one million NHS staff are receiving a payrise from 1 June - a fair and reasonable pay increase for our valued NHS staff as we continue to cut waiting lists. Our hardworking NHS staff have played a vital role in supporting patients in the face of the Covid pandemic and they deserve to feel valued as well as having all the resources they need to do their jobs. That is why we have announced over one million NHS staff in England, including nurses, paramedics and 999 call handlers, will receive a backdated pay rise with newly qualified nurses receiving more than £2,750 extra over two years and over £1,890 in one-off payments this year. We hugely value the work of NHS staff and the vital role they are playing to cut waiting lists, one of the Prime Minister’s five priorities, and recognise the work they put in day in and day out.
Although it’s not in North Cornwall it’s important for local people to know that during June, the A30 upgrade project will be carrying out extensive construction work at Chiverton. As part of this work, National Highways will remove the existing Chiverton Cross roundabout. To do this safely, National Highways will be closing a section of the A30 and part of the A390 from 8pm Friday 16th June - 6am Monday 19th June 2023. Diversion routes will be in place and delays are expected in the area. Public transport will still be operating. Please plan in advance for any journeys, allow extra time, and avoid the area if possible.
During the Parliamentary recess, I had several engagements in the constituency. It was a great pleasure to host Andrea Leadsom MP at the Wadebridge Family Hub. Andrea is a parliamentary champion for the family hubs, and it was good to be able to showcase the work which is being done here in North Cornwall. It was also fantastic to welcome Johnny Mercer MP to Launceston in his capacity as Minister for Veterans’ Affairs as we celebrated the arrival of the Armed Forces Day flag. Armed Forces Day honours the commitment and service of men and women from the RAF, British Army and Royal Navy, which is especially important in Cornwall as 39,000 veterans reside in the Duchy. I’m very pleased that Cornwall will host Armed Forces Day 2023 on June 24th as we continue to recognise the important role both our past and present future Armed Forces play in both the defence of our country and our way of life.
