I was very proud to be able to officially welcome many of the Ukrainian families who have arrived in North Cornwall at a very special event set up by my team. Along with meeting the new members of our community I also took time to reflect on how lucky we are to live in a country which is at peace. The UK has not seen destruction on the scale we are witnessing in Ukraine since the Blitz in the Second World War, which some of my older constituents will remember from their childhood and which still affects them to this day.
It is sobering to realise that many of the children who have escaped from the war in Ukraine will also carry these memories with them, but they will also remember the kindness of the people in places like North Cornwall. A very special thanks to Launceston Rugby Club for allowing us to host the event at the rugby ground. I must also say a huge thanks to my team, especially Jane and Rachel from the constituency office who worked extremely hard to put this together. Several local and national companies donated food and drink for the event and a list of the organisations is available on the 'news' section of my website. I have since had some great feedback from the sponsors who have told me that our guests are much happier after meeting other Ukrainian nationals and feel less isolated. The welcome from people in North Cornwall has been fantastic and it's times like this which make me proud to be a Cornishman.
I’m aware that the cost of living is a real problem for people and I’m happy that the Chancellor reiterated our commitment to ease the cost of living for households and set out our plan to boost productivity and long-term prosperity in the UK. Putin’s invasion of Ukraine and other global challenges have resulted in rising cost of living pressures around the world, including in the United Kingdom. That is why the Chancellor used his speech at the annual CBI conference to reiterate that we stand ready to do more to cut costs for families as well as calling on business leaders to supercharge our recovery by investing more, training more and innovating more. There is no measure that any government could take, no law we could pass, to eradicate these global forces overnight. Still, our immediate measures are helping families now while we grow the economy and boost productivity in the long term. If you are struggling or need support or guidance please do get in touch, my team and I are always just a phone call or an email away.
